Apparently it was nothing but mayhem on North Street most of the early Saturday hours. Comings and goings with lots of noise as the bar crowds jammed the walkways. All seemed to climax about three-thirty when an assumed bar hopper pulled a knife on someone who promptly pulled out a gun and capped a few rounds. There was a witness, it was reported, but both armed people had already disappeared by the time police arrived. The mayor has scheduled town meetings and given the promise that something will be done, but, frankly, things have deteriorated so badly that I cannot imagine an easy solution. This is not the neighborhood I so enjoyed for the last fifty years . . .
